Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Framework

Busy days leaving only scraps of time? Mozart composed around a packed schedule of lessons and concerts. Borrow how he split his day, not his sleep.

Overview

Mozart's 1782 letter to his sister describes a Vienna day of piano lessons, concerts and social calls that left only scraps for composing. His hair was done by six and he was fully dressed by seven. He composed until nine and gave lessons from nine to one. Lunch was at one unless he was invited out, in which case two or three. He could never work before five or six in the evening and was often prevented by a concert; otherwise he composed until nine, then visited his fiancée Constanze until 10:30 or eleven depending on her mother's mood, came home and composed again, often until one in the morning, and was up at six. He said he often did not know whether he was on his head or his heels. As a week it is a five-hour night, a four-hour day job, a long social lunch, and creative work in three pieces totalling eight hours, two of them after eleven at night. It is the side project around the paid work, drawn at its most brutal. Adopt the split, not the sleep.
